In the Night's Darkness - The Storming of Kristianstad in August 1676
Gathering and introduction in the lecture hall
On an August night 350 years ago, Danish soldiers crossed the moats and fortification walls surrounding Kristianstad. The defenders were caught off guard, and after street fighting with hundreds of casualties on each side, the city changed hands - it had previously belonged to Sweden for eighteen years. What followed was three hours of plunder.
Almost nothing of the city's fortifications is visible above ground today. Claes Pettersson and Fredrik Larsson from Sydsvensk Arkeologi lead the walk to the sites where excavations in recent years have uncovered extensive remains from the fortified city and its inhabitants.
