Tiggarfolk och herrskap
Selma Lagerlöf describes Lövdala as a safe and beloved place - a centre of community, imagination, and moral values, where her love of storytelling took root. In Tiggarfolk & Herrskap, Västanå Musik & Teater weaves together several narratives from Selma's works that revolve around Lövdala, with the supernatural as a recurring element for those who act unjustly.
At the heart are the cavaliers of Ekeby - lost, former heroes living a parasitic existence without status or possessions, yet simultaneously sought-after and gifted artists. They oscillate between daydreams of past glory, the carefree euphoria of the present, and the corroding emptiness of self-contempt. The violinist Liljecrona is torn between the adventures and passion of a free life on one hand, and the home at Lövdala with its family duties on the other. When the beggars seek help from the gentry, the question of goodness and generosity comes to a head - what becomes of those who allow stinginess and resentment to govern their actions toward the dependent? The old Colonel Beerencreutz learns he has but one day left to live: what meaning will he give it, and what is the right choice?
