Spring Concert with Heyward & Hardenberger — Göteborgs Konserthus, Gothenburg

Jonathon Heyward, music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the youngest person to hold this position in a major American symphony orchestra, conducts a two-part programme.

The first half is devoted to Bernd Alois Zimmermann's trumpet concerto "Nobody knows de trouble I see" (1954) - a work that carries criticism of racism and the mechanisms behind World War II. Zimmermann spent his entire life integrating free improvisation into orchestral music, and the concerto reflects this: the orchestra is expanded with a jazz band and Hammond organ, and the influences of 1950s big band are clearly evident. The soloist is Håkan Hardenberger, called by the press an "undisputed master" of the trumpet.

The second half consists of Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony, the Leningrad Symphony - a work that carries all the suffering the inhabitants endured during the occupation in World War II and demands the full combined resources of the orchestra.

The previously announced programme has changed. An introduction of approximately 30 minutes is held in the Grand Hall one hour before the concert; it is included in the ticket price and has free seating.
