Niklas Strömstedt concerts summer 2026
You might not be able to rattle off his albums from memory, but during that football summer of 1994 half of Sweden was singing along to the chorus about digging gold in the USA. He was the one behind it. And the drama was there even before his name was known: when he was born in Lund on 25 July 1958 he had a large swelling on his neck, a congenital tumour, and the midwife immediately placed him in an incubator with a note that read "Nameless Strömstedt". The doctors in Lund removed the lump. Today the name is anything but nameless, and summer 2026 sees Niklas Strömstedt concerts scheduled across the country, starting at Solliden in Borgholm on 12 July.
Niklas Strömstedt concerts summer 2026: all dates
Summer 2026, Niklas Strömstedt plays on seven stages from Öland in the south to Uppsala in the north, with the opening night at Solliden in Borgholm on 12 July. The tour moves across castles, a 17th-century fortress and classic park stages.
Summer stages have long been his home turf. After his breakthrough in the late 80s he became a fixture on Swedish outdoor stages, and 2026 is no exception. Here are the confirmed shows, in order:
- 12 July - Solliden, Borgholm (opening night)
- 16 July - Sommar i Trebo, Sandviken
- 25 July - Tjolöholms slotts sommarscen, Göteborg
- 30 July - Strömma Farmlodge, Tvååker
- 31 July - Carlstens Fästning, Marstrand
- 1 August - Stadsträdgården, Örebro
- 2 August - Parksnäckan, Uppsala
That the opening night lands at Solliden is fitting. Öland in midsummer, one of the country's most beloved outdoor stages and an artist whose songs often deal with exactly those kinds of bright evenings. A small curiosity is tucked further into the calendar: the concert at Tjolöholms slott on 25 July falls on his own birthday. He turns 68 there, right in the middle of the tour.
From DJ at Atlantic to the organ with Ulf Lundell
Before Niklas Strömstedt became a solo artist he was the man in the background: club DJ, keyboardist and songwriter for others. His way into the industry came through one of the hottest nightclubs of the 70s.
He was born in Lund but grew up in the Stockholm suburb of Hagsätra, the son of author Margareta Strömstedt and Expressen's legendary editor-in-chief Bo Strömstedt. His childhood was filled with football - he even played for AIK as a junior - until one knee gave way. That ended the sporting career and music took over. In 1975 he started as a disc jockey at Gröna Lund, and two years later he was in the booth at the newly opened nightclub Atlantic in Stockholm while still attending secondary school.
It was not a bad place to make connections. ABBA, Björn Skifs and the rest of the Swedish pop elite hung out there, and when international stars like Rod Stewart or Elton John played in Stockholm, Atlantic was where they ended up afterwards. It was at the club that the contact was made that changed everything: he got in touch with Ulf Lundell's producer, ended up in Lundell's touring band and was thus inside the music industry. From the late 70s to the late 80s he played keyboards on Lundell's records and tours. For many it is a revelation that he was the one behind the keyboard on the distinctive organ lines of "Odysseus".
His own records were not long in coming, but the breakthrough was. He released two solo albums, "Skjut inte... det är bara jag!" in 1981 and "Andra äventyr" in 1983, without either achieving any notable success. In the meantime he wrote prolifically for others. As early as 1980 he co-wrote a Swedish lyric with Per Gessle for Nick Lowe's "Switchboard Susan", which Gyllene Tider recorded as "Marie i Växeln", and a few years later he co-wrote "Den bästa dagen" and "En känsla av regn" for Marie Fredriksson.
The breakthrough, "Sista morgonen" and gold in the USA
It took until the late 80s before Niklas Strömstedt became a household name. Then things moved quickly, and with GES he reached all the way to a national anthem.
First came Christmas. In 1987 he recorded an album together with Lasse Lindbom and Janne Bark under the name Triad, and that same year the group had a big Christmas hit with "Tänd ett ljus", a song that has since become an essential part of Swedish December music. Two years later came the big solo leap: "Sista morgonen" dominated Svensktoppen and lifted him from background musician to front-of-stage figure. In 1990 the album "Om!" followed, whose title track would have a strange afterlife much later.
He also proved to have a nose for competition songs. In 1992 he wrote both music and lyrics for "I morgon är en annan dag", the song with which Christer Björkman won Melodifestivalen that year. But the greatest reach came with the trio GES, which he formed in 1994 together with Anders Glenmark and Thomas "Orup" Eriksson. Their "När vi gräver guld i USA" was written ahead of the football World Cup that same summer and became something more than a summer earworm. When the national team also took bronze, the song became true public property, and GES were awarded a Grammis for song of the year.
Alongside his own artistry he has put words in the mouths of entire theatre audiences. Together with Björn Ulvaeus he translated the song lyrics of the musical "Mamma Mia!" into Swedish, and as a TV host he has presented programmes including "Tack för musiken!" and "Tillsammans med Strömstedts".
When "Om" went viral thirty-five years later
In recent years Niklas Strömstedt has become as much an author and storyteller as a pop artist, while an old song found a whole new audience online.
The story behind the writing is charmingly everyday. During the pandemic he took over his daughters' cat account on social media, started posting small reflections and a song every Friday, and it grew from there. Out of that same urge to write came the autobiography "Om", published by Norstedts in autumn 2023. He describes the book himself as a gig, with chapters that are songs in different tempos, uptempo and ballads, hits and flops, doubt and hope. The reviews were effusive in a way few had expected of a pop text, with critics highlighting how disarming and honest the narrative is.
The truly unexpected twist came in spring 2025. His title track "Om" from 1990 found new life when it went viral on TikTok, and in May that same year it climbed to ninth place among Sweden's most-played songs on Spotify. A song that had turned thirty-five, suddenly being streamed by a generation that was not born when it was written. Strömstedt himself has noted that it felt good and that he thinks the song holds up as fairly timeless. That same spring he also released the single "Långholmsgatan 2" together with Johanna Frostling, a sign that the pen has never really been put down.
What to expect on stage
A Strömstedt concert is rarely a straightforward show. Expect equal parts singing, stories and audience sing-alongs, drawn from a repertoire spanning more than forty years.
Recognition has always been his strength. The concerts are marked by a warm and personal tone where humour and sing-alongs have their place, and with a catalogue that includes "Sista morgonen", "En kvinna och en man", "Om" and the collaborative songs, there is no shortage of choruses that sing themselves. That he is fundamentally a storyteller shows clearly: the between-song chat is part of the show, not filler between numbers. Anyone who has read the autobiography will recognise the tone immediately, as he builds his concerts much the way he built the book.
The format shifts from night to night. The show at Stadsträdgården in Örebro on 1 August is advertised with a full band, while the evening at Carlstens Fästning in Marstrand on 31 July is performed together with singer Fanny Avonne. The settings also leave their mark: hearing these ballads inside a 17th-century fortress or on the lawn in front of Tjolöholms slott gives a different frame than a concert hall. That combination - beloved songs in beautiful summer surroundings - is the whole point of the tour.
Practical: tickets and venues
Tickets for most shows are sold through Tickster, and you will find the right link for each date on the respective event page. Several of the concerts are outdoors, so plan your travel and seating accordingly.
Since the dates are clustered at the end of July and the beginning of August, it is perfectly possible to combine a concert with a weekend away. Solliden in Borgholm is a natural choice for anyone already holidaying on Öland, while Tjolöholms slott is within easy reach of the Gothenburg area. If you want to be sure of a spot it pays to book early for the opening night and for the smaller summer stages, where capacity is limited. A tip is to read the description for each date before you buy, as it varies between venues whether seating is numbered or general admission.
If you are looking for more shows the same weekend you will find the full selection in our concert overview and in the combined events calendar. If you are also in Stockholm on 10 July, Rikard Amsköld & Lovisa Niklasson at The Node could be a pleasant complement before the summer tour gets properly under way. A full picture of his career can be found on the artist page for Niklas Strömstedt.
