Women and Apple Trees — Kulturhuset Glada Hudik, Hudiksvall

Sally and Ellen grow up in a poor neighbourhood of Norrköping in the late 1800s. As adults, they meet again and find in each other a rare strength. Ellen is the quiet, enduring mother struggling in a destructive marriage. Sally is righteous and fearless - a woman who speaks loudly even when no one wants to listen. Around them, children move through a daily life marked by hardship, loss, and moments of belonging.

Moa Martinson's 1933 novel portrays women's living conditions with a gaze that still feels unusually direct, a language rooted in earth, labour, and survival. It is a story of sisterhood as resistance and friendship as necessity in a world where security was rarely to be found. Now Women and Apple Trees takes on new theatrical life in an adaptation by Tora von Platen and directed by Julia Marko-Nord.
