MaktmissSpråk — Teatern, Hudiksvall

MaktmissSpråk is a solo performance written, directed and performed by Issa Homsi. The show follows the character Bashir through everyday situations - job hunting, social encounters - where his language skills are constantly questioned. Through humor and satire, it examines how language functions as an instrument of power and how accent shapes how people are perceived and treated.

Issa Homsi moved to Sweden from Syria in 2014 at age 23 as an economist and later studied at Stockholm University of the Arts 2020-2023. The performance draws on his own experiences and over 20 interviews, debuting at the Departure scenography festival in autumn 2022 before its public premiere at Stockholm City Theatre in autumn 2023.

Script, direction, scenography and performance: Issa Homsi. Costume: Ewa Wallin and Nils Harning. Lighting design: Lina Benneth. Sound: Leonardo Guzman. Photography: Boghos Ghshranian. Mentored by Per Sörberg, Matthew Allen, Niklas Hald, Pia Olby, Alejandro Bonnet and Karin Rudfeldt at Stockholm University of the Arts.
