Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto

Swedish violinist Daniel Lozakovich performs Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto under the direction of Jun Märkl.

On the conductor's podium stands Jun Märkl, whose roots span both Asia and Europe, bringing together the world's musical traditions - and, in the words of Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu, "swimming in a sea that has neither east nor west". The programme reflects this vision: Takemitsu, influenced by Debussy, lets a flock of impressionistic birds descend into an enchanted garden in A Flock Descends into the Pentagonal Garden, while Stravinsky's Le chant du rossignol employs the East's pentatonic scales to evoke the Chinese emperor's court from the tale of the Nightingale.
