Mother's Day
It is Mother's Day and three adult sons gather at their childhood home to celebrate their mother. By all accounts, they are not there by choice - and neither is she. Yet they prepare a cake in the kitchen, just as they did many years ago, when their father was alive and the celebration ended in disaster.
The reluctant mother, played by Helena Bergström, has locked herself in the bedroom. She hears the sounds of porcelain, cutlery, and bickering from the kitchen. Before the sons open the door, memories have already caught up with her too.
The play is written and directed by Alex Schulman, who previously staged Comfort Reports at Dramaten in 2022. Like many of his novels, Mother's Day is based on real events from childhood and told from two perspectives across two acts. Schulman is also currently directing the film Archipelago, with a planned premiere in autumn 2026.
Helena Bergström, known among other things from Angel Garden and a long list of films and television series, has also directed both film and theatre. She performed several roles at Dramaten between 1987 and 1991.
Tickets for the autumn performances will be released on 19 March at 13:00.
