Bruch with Ava Bahari

The evening features three works that all revolve around human struggle - from profound tragedy to resistance and hope.

The concert opens with Adam Maor's L'abri d'Al-'Amiriyya, a three-part work with different layers and filters that create a complex texture. The concluding section explores "heterophony" within Arabic music - a melodic line is played simultaneously by a heterogeneous group where the voices are modified and embellished individually, while the music moves in a shared direction. The title refers to an event during the first Gulf War, when a US-led force bombed the civilian neighbourhood of Al-'Amiriyya in Baghdad, believing it housed a military command centre. Around 400 civilians were killed.

Following this, violinist Ava Bahari performs Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 - one of the most frequently performed works in the violin repertoire. This is her first performance with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra.

The concert concludes with Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 11 in G minor, "The Year 1905" (composed 1957). On the surface, the symphony depicts "Bloody Sunday" in Saint Petersburg in 1905, when the tsar's soldiers opened fire on peaceful demonstrators - but the work can also be read as an allegory of Soviet oppression, particularly the Hungarian uprising of 1956.
