Bach's Christmas Oratorio Parts 1-3

Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio (1734-1735) comprises six cantatas written for the church year's festivals between Christmas and Epiphany. This concert presents parts 1-3, which follow the story of Jesus's birth, the shepherds' adoration, and the naming in the temple.

Part 1 opens with the jubilant choir "Jauchzet, frohlocket" featuring trumpets and timpani. Part 2 moves through a serene, pastoral soundscape, and part 3 concludes with music marked by dignity and trust as the child receives his name, Jesus.

The soloists are Kathrin Lorentzen (soprano), Kristina Hammarström (mezzo-soprano), Thomas Volle (tenor), and Henning von Schulmann (bass). They perform with Norrköping Vocal Ensemble and Sankt Olof Chamber Choir, conducted by chief conductor Karl-Heinz Steffens.
