Moa Martinson's 1933 novel follows Sally and Ellen - two women who grew up in the poor quarters of Norrköping in the late 1800s and find each other again in adulthood. Ellen endures a destructive marriage, while Sally speaks plainly even when those around her would rather not hear it. Around them, children navigate a daily life of hard work and loss, yet also of belonging.
The novel portrays women's living conditions in language rooted in earth and labour, and its social pathos has not diminished over the years. It is about sisterhood as a counterforce and friendship as pure necessity - about how two women carry each other's lives when security is barely to be found.
Now the novel comes to life on stage in Tora von Platen's dramatisation, directed by Julia Marko-Nord. Featuring Emilia Roosmann, Tuuli Heinonen, Maria Sundbom, Mårten Andersson and Emil Grudemo El Hayek. Costume design and scenography: Sven Haraldsson. Composition: Martin Hederos. Makeup design: Angelica Ekeberg. Lighting design: Sofia Linde and Hannele Philipson. Dramaturge: Ninna Tersman. Performance length: 2 hours including intermission.
A co-production with Västerbottensteatern.
