Two women from Norrköping's poor quarter - Sally and Ellen - are followed from childhood to adulthood in a story set at the end of the 19th century. Ellen endures a destructive marriage quietly but stubbornly. Sally claims her place and speaks plainly, even when those around her would rather not hear it. Around them, children navigate a daily life of hardship and loss, yet also of belonging.
Moa Martinson's 1933 novel explores what friendship and sisterhood can mean when security is a luxury one cannot afford. The language is rooted in earth and labour, the perspective strikingly direct - and that perspective still holds.
The novel is now dramatised by Tora von Platen and directed by Julia Marko-Nord, featuring Emilia Roosmann, Tuuli Heinonen, Maria Sundbom, Mårten Andersson and Emil Grudemo El Hayek. Set and costumes: Sven Haraldsson. Music: Martin Hederos. Lighting design: Sofia Linde and Hannele Philipson. Dramaturgy: Ninna Tersman. Make-up design: Angelica Ekeberg.
The production is a co-production with Västerbottensteatern and plays at Christinateatern in Kristinehamn. Running time: 2 hours including interval.
