Iskallt - Terje Isungset Ice Quartet
Göteborgs Konserthus, Gothenburg
Terje Isungset has visited Stenhammarsalen several times with improvisations as a percussionist in the folk music group Group. Now he returns - with water in solid form.
Since 1999, when Isungset composed music beneath a frozen waterfall in Lillehammer, he has explored the sonic potential of ice. This has resulted in several albums of ice music and an annual Ice Music Festival. The discovery came from a moment of pure inspiration: "I recorded the sound of the waterfall and then I struck the ice. It was so beautiful. It was like falling in love."
The quartet plays ice harp, ice horn, ice saxophone and ice bass alongside more traditional instruments and vocals, moving freely between the suggestive and the dynamic. The unpredictability of the instruments makes each concert its own occasion - with murmuring tones, cool overtones and rhythms that carry traces of the landscape where meltwater once froze into ice.
