Barriers and Opportunities: Political Participation for People with Intellectual Disabilities - Lessons from a World-Leading Initiative

People with intellectual disabilities were the last to gain voting rights, and electoral participation remains low. But it doesn't have to be this way. Through a research project in adult education, it has been shown that it is possible to increase both knowledge about politics, understanding of how voting works, and actual electoral participation.

Stefan Johansson is one of the researchers who has followed this initiative and is an expert in accessibility and universal design. During the lecture, he shares insights from the Mitt Val project and how participation in study circles led to increased political engagement. Stefan holds a doctorate in technology and is affiliated faculty at KTH, researching how everyone can participate in the digital society. He completed his dissertation in 2019 with the thesis "Design for Participation and Inclusion will Follow: Disabled People and the Digital Society".
