Ballet The Nutcracker

John Neumeier's version of The Nutcracker is a coming-of-age story and a tribute to choreographer Marius Petipa. Unlike most productions, Neumeier avoids direct Christmas references - instead, the main character Marie celebrates her twelfth birthday and is drawn by the mysterious ballet master Drosselmeier into the world of dance. Drosselmeier takes her to the court theatre, where she dances in new pointe shoes alongside cadet Günther, who gives her a mysterious nutcracker. Throughout the performance, Marie not only steps into the theatre's world - she also falls in love for the first time. The performance is presented by Hamburg Ballet and shown in cinemas with its premiere on 29 November.
