Opera: The Girl from the Golden West

Puccini's "American" opera had its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera in 1910, with the composer himself in the audience. The story unfolds during the California Gold Rush, and the title character is one of Puccini's most compelling heroines - a strong and independent woman determined to win the man she loves. After decades of declining popularity, the opera is now regarded as one of Puccini's finest works.

Soprano Vida Miknevičiūtė makes her Met debut as Minnie, the tough saloon owner. Tenor SeokJong Baek plays the bandit who arrives in the mining town, and baritone Christopher Maltman is the lawman who also has his eye on Minnie. Maestro Keri-Lynn Wilson conducts. The performance is broadcast live from the Met and shown at Gideågården's cinema, with one intermission.
