Malmö SymfoniOrkester (MSO) was founded in 1925 and has been a dedicated symphony orchestra since 1991, when it separated from its former dual role as the city's opera ensemble. Around 90 musicians from some 20 countries make up the ensemble, which has been resident at Malmö Live Concert Hall since 2015 - a hall modelled acoustically on Vienna's Musikverein. Past chief conductors include Paavo Järvi and Vernon Handley; British conductor Martyn Brabbins took over the baton from the 2025-26 season.
MSO performed with Swedish pop artist Jonathan Johansson at Malmöfestivalen on 12 August 2026.
German conductor Christian Blex was appointed MSO's Principal Guest Conductor for the 2026/2027-2028/2029 seasons; Blex won the Herbert von Karajan Young Conductors Award 2025.
MSO opened its 2026-27 season under chief conductor Martyn Brabbins with Richard Strauss's Don Juan and Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5.
