PAUS: Lunch Concert // Malmö Symphony Orchestra — Konsertsalen, Malmö

The string section of Malmö Symphony Orchestra performs music by Franz Schreker, Bryce Dessner and Richard Strauss under the direction of Clemens Schuldt. The concert takes place in Konsertsalen on 26 August at 12.15. Free admission - complimentary tickets must be booked in advance.

Franz Schreker was silenced by the Nazis because of his Jewish heritage and died forgotten in 1934, but his music has been rediscovered in recent years - notably through the Royal Opera's 2019 production of Das ferne klang. His Intermezzo for string orchestra is a romantic piece lasting just over six minutes. In contrast, Bryce Dessner's Aheym for string orchestra is performed - driven, interwoven and rhythmically complex. Dessner is perhaps best known as guitarist and songwriter in the rock band The National, but he also composes orchestral works and film scores.

Richard Strauss composed Metamorphosen at the end of the Second World War, one of his final works. Strauss himself described in his diary, a few days after completing the piece, how German culture had turned to ash during twelve years of brutality and cultural hostility. Metamorphosen is today regarded as one of string music's greatest masterpieces.
