With five decades on the music scene and 18 albums to their name, Aswad ranks among Britain's most influential reggae bands. The band was formed in West London in 1974 and was among the first to establish reggae in Europe. Over the years they have collaborated with names such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, Maxi Priest and Sly & Robbie.

Their breakthrough came with "Back To Africa", and in 1988 their version of "Don't Turn Around" topped the British singles chart. Songs like "Shine", "Give A Little Love", "Next To You" and "On & On" rank among the band's most well-known tracks. The album Rise & Shine was nominated for a Grammy for Best Reggae Album, and the band has also received a MOBO Award for Outstanding Contribution to Black Music.

Following the death of founder and vocalist Drummie Zeb, his son Sulaiman Gaye-Clarke - who has been part of Aswad for over 20 years - has taken over as lead vocalist and continues the band's legacy.
