Wicked

In October 2026, Gothenburg Opera returns with its production of Wicked - the largest musical production ever staged, featuring an expanded orchestra, large ensemble, and spectacular scenic design. During its first run, the production was seen by over 110,000 people and played to full houses.

Wicked tells the story of what happened in the land of Oz before Dorothy arrived, from the perspective of two witches. How the unlikely friends Elphaba and Galinda found each other, became the wicked and good witches, and managed to defeat the evil wizard's tyranny - a story about outsiderdom, courage, and love. Several songs, including "Defying gravity", have become major hits.

Musical stars Feline Andersson and Anna Salonen return to their breakthrough roles as Elphaba ("The wicked witch of the west") and Galinda. The production is directed by Samuel Harjanne and had its Swedish premiere at Gothenburg Opera in 2023. The original production had its world premiere on Broadway in 2003 and opened in the West End three years later.
