Lind, Pärt and Ravel

The evening opens with Arvo Pärt's Fratres in an arrangement for string orchestra and percussion - one of the most celebrated expressions of his tintinnabuli compositional principle.

Then a large mobile phone orchestra takes the stage. A youth ensemble performs two works by Anders Lind: first together with a percussion trio, then in dialogue with Norrlandsoperan's woodwind and brass sections. Lind, who views the mobile phone orchestra as a new electronic instrument group within the traditional orchestra, performs himself on analog synthesizer.

After the intermission, the entire Norrlandsoperan symphony orchestra plays Ravel's Bolero - but in a reworked arrangement where saxophones, celesta and harp are replaced by electronic sounds performed by the mobile phone orchestra and analog synthesizer. The evening concludes with the world premiere of a new work by Lind for symphony orchestra, mobile phone orchestra and analog synthesizer, combining electronically generated sounds with recorded and processed sounds from the orchestra.

The concert is the finale of the three-year MAXAT project, carried out by Norrlandsoperan in collaboration with Anders Lind, with support from the Swedish Arts Council and in partnership with Umeå University.
