Matarv: Recipes, Memories and Women's Invisible Labour — Göteborgs stadsmuseum, Gothenburg

What does an old recipe book really tell us? Between stained pages, handwritten margin notes and preserved favourite recipes lie stories of everyday life, care, women's work and social change.

This programme offers insight into the research project "A Life in Recipes", where recipe collections and notes written and used by women are examined as cultural-historical documents. Through personal recipe books - including from researcher Annelie Sjölander-Lindqvist's own family - perspectives open onto the home's food ideals, nutrition, welfare and the often invisible labour of the household. How is a culinary heritage formed? What can handwriting, changed ingredients and small margin notes tell us about lived lives?

The lecture is held by Annelie Sjölander-Lindqvist, associate professor at the Department of Global Studies and director of the Centre for Critical Heritage Studies at the University of Gothenburg. The following discussion is moderated by Jenny Högström Berntson, coordinator of the research network #matarv and coordinator of the Centre for Critical Heritage Studies at the University of Gothenburg. The event is a collaboration between the Centre for Critical Heritage Studies, the research network #matarv at the University of Gothenburg and the Gothenburg City Museum.

After the discussion, there is an opportunity to register for a workshop on 5 November from 1-3 pm, where participants in small groups discuss their own handwritten recipes. The workshop is part of the research project "Food Memories and Manuscripts: Our Recipes as Cultural Heritage". The lecture is included in the museum's admission ticket.
