John Tavener's "The Protecting Veil" for cello and strings is a meditative work influenced by Orthodox church music and minimalism. The cellist engages in close dialogue with the string orchestra, and the music moves between long, resonant tones and profound drama.

Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 3 in D minor was composed between 1873 and 1877 and is often called the "Wagner Symphony". Bruckner revised the work no fewer than six times. The symphony bears clear traces of his admiration for Wagner - powerful brass choruses, sweeping strings, and majestic themes alternate with quiet, meditative passages.
