Luisa Miller falls in love with Rodolfo, who belongs to the highest echelon of society. His father allows no one to forge their own path, while Luisa's father fights for his daughter's right to choose freely. Soon Luisa becomes entangled in a web of lies, lust for power, and jealousy - and ultimately her freedom hinges on the choice between truth and submission.

GöteborgsOperan's new production is set on a private yacht, where Luisa and her father are part of the crew. The boundary between the lower deck and the glittering salons above mirrors the divide between obedience and freedom.

Verdi composed Luisa Miller between Macbeth and Rigoletto, and the opera is as powerful as those works. Tender love and white-hot hatred are woven together as the music drives the drama toward catastrophe.
