La traviata
At the heart of the festivities shines the independent Violetta - she wants to live as long as she can. Then she meets Alfredo and experiences love for the first time, suddenly glimpsing a future she thought impossible. But her surroundings won't let her forget where she belongs. Alfredo's father pressures her to abandon her beloved to save the family's reputation. When Alfredo learns what has happened, it is too late.
Violetta is both fragile and uncompromising in a society where men claim the right to decide how a woman should be. Verdi's music follows her with rare clarity: the freedom that beckons, the longing that drives, and the solitude from which there is ultimately no escape.
In Gothenburg Opera's new production, contemporary and historical elegance meet. The costumes are inspired by baroque, Italian mafia, and carnival. The production has been selected for the Savonlinna Opera Festival, where it will premiere in summer 2026 with Gothenburg Opera's soloists, choir, and orchestra - before opening the season in Gothenburg.
"Convincing throughout." (Helsingin Sanomat) / "Captures the essence of Verdi's opera" (Savon Sanomat) / "Glittering, sharp, true, eye-opening" (Itä-Savo)
