From Myth to Nordic Light
The concert opens with the overture to Gluck's mythological opera Iphigenia in Tauris - a piece that begins calmly and idyllically but soon transforms into a storm where Iphigenia and her priestesses pray for protection.
Next comes Mozart's only true flute concerto, Flute Concerto No. 1 in G major, K. 313 - his most celebrated work in the genre, sparkling and imaginative. The evening concludes with Sibelius' Symphony No. 1 in E minor, op. 39, written the same year as Finlandia and the composer's international breakthrough. From the opening clarinet solo to the tempestuous finale, expansive melodies unfold.
In autumn 2026, the Gothenburg Opera Orchestra is invited to perform at Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg with portions of this programme.
