La traviata

GöteborgsOperan presents a new production of Verdi's "La traviata" that has received strong reviews since its premiere at Olofsborg: "Convincing throughout" (Helsingin Sanomat), "Captures the essence of Verdi's opera" (Savon Sanomat), "Brilliant, sharp, true, eye-opening" (Itä-Savo).

At the heart of the festivities shines the independent Violetta. She wants to live there as long as she can - until she meets Alfredo and experiences love for the first time. Suddenly she glimpses a future she never thought possible, and dares to choose it. But those around her won't let her forget where she belongs. Alfredo's father pressures her to abandon her beloved to save the family's reputation. When Alfredo understands what has happened, it is too late.

Violetta is both fragile and uncompromising in a society where men claim the right to decide how a woman should be. With rare clarity, Verdi's music captures her world: the freedom that beckons, the longing that drives, and the solitude from which there is ultimately no escape.

The costumes in the production are inspired by baroque, Italian mafia, and carnival. The production has been selected for the opera festival in Savonlinna, where it will premiere in summer 2026 with GöteborgsOperan's soloists, choir, and orchestra - before opening the season in Göteborg.
