Norrlandsoperans Symfoniorkester is a Swedish professional symphony orchestra based in Umeå, operating as part of NorrlandsOperan - northern Sweden's main performing arts house. Its roots go back to a military wind band founded in 1841; the string section joined in 1976 and the orchestra gained its current formal status in 1991. The ensemble has won the Swedish Grammis award and was nominated for a US Grammy for the album Urban Concertos, and it performs 25-30 symphonic concerts per year alongside all of NorrlandsOperan's opera productions.
