In her debut as a choreographer, international waacking icon Mounia Nassangar explores dance's power to take over when words fail. Five dancers approach waacking in their own individual ways - with the urgency of movement that resists oppression, and with the body as a means to transform inner and outer constraints into freedom and self-determination.

Waacking (originally spelled Whacking) has its roots in 1970s Los Angeles and emerged from the LGBTQ disco scene. The style developed from what was called punking - a reinterpretation of the derogatory word "punk" - and is characterized by dynamic, emphatic arm movements in time with the music. In an era when queer people were largely invisible and stigmatized, waacking offered a platform for expression and visibility.
