In his fifth symphony, Gustav Mahler lays bare his inner world and transforms his yearning for love into great art. Midway through the symphony, the music softens - he meets his future wife Alma, and newly in love, he composes the fourth movement.
It is the same adagietto that spread across the world in 1971 when Luchino Visconti let it carry the mood of the film Death in Venice - and in doing so created an entire generation of Mahler lovers.
