Chamber Concert #1

The season's opening chamber concert begins with Joseph Haydn's String Quartet in G minor, op. 74, no. 3, known as The Rider. Haydn created the genre - a quartet with four equal voices - and The Rider was written at the height of his career, when he was a successful freelancer working between Vienna and London. It is one of his most beloved string quartet compositions.

Steve Reich's Different trains is a musical narrative about three train journeys: one in the USA before World War II, one in Europe during the war, and one in the USA after the war. As a child, Reich commuted by train between Los Angeles and New York to visit his divorced parents - later he reflected on how he, as a Jew, could have been forced to take a train to one of the Nazi concentration camps during the same period in Europe. The work is written for string quartet and tape with recorded voices from the USA and Europe.
