Anders Nilsson's cello concerto received a standing ovation at its premiere at Malmö Live Konserthus in 2020. Now comes the next premiere: his fifth symphony, inspired by Thomas Mann's novel Doctor Faustus - where a composer sells his soul to the Devil.
The programme also features Beethoven's Fifth, whose four opening notes are among the most recognizable in music history. They hardly form a melody in the conventional sense, but rather a motif that permeates the entire symphony - often described as fate's knock on the door.
