Säsongspremiär SON - Symfoniska paradis

Andrea Tarrodi composed Paradisfåglar after watching a David Attenborough nature film about the birds of Oceania. The piece is a visual and colorful journey marked by the richness of these birds.

Samuel Barber's violin concerto from 1939 has an unusual structure for the genre: the two opening movements are warmly lyrical and melodic, each around ten minutes long - but are abruptly interrupted by a disproportionately short and breathtaking virtuosic finale in perpetuum mobile. How the movements actually connect remains shrouded in mystery; yet Barber himself was satisfied with his creation and wanted it exactly this way.

Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 1 in D major (1889) opens one of music history's most personal symphonic journeys. The work, which Mahler called "a tone poem in symphonic form", encompasses the span between intimacy and irony, nature poetry and existential gravity, which would come to characterize his entire output. Just as in Tarrodi's Paradisfåglar, we hear nature awakening in the opening - birdsong, horn calls, and a distant melody from Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen emerging from nothing. The second movement is a roughly hewn Viennese ländler, the third a funeral march built on Brother John in minor key where grotesque irony meets melancholy. In the finale, Mahler breaks into a dramatic struggle between darkness and light, until the music finally shines in triumphant D major.
